Based on Unix, an operating system renowned for its stability, Linux is the biggest
competitor to Windows.
There are a number of distributions of Linux including: Red Hat, Suse, Debian and Mandrake.
Until recently Linux distributions were considered to be for the technically-minded. However
the more recent versions of Linux operating systems are much easier to use and most come with a host of powerful
applications including:
- an office suite - a word processor, database and spreadsheet applications, and email clients.
- graphics programs including 3d and vector graphics applications.
- several web browsers.
- HTML editors - for developing web pages/sites.
- lots of free games.
- and lots, lots more!
In addition to this Linux is widely considered to be more stable and secure than other well-known
operating systems. It is
also highly configurable so can be tailored closely to your needs.
